Baby with Two Faces is a ‘Gift from God’
08th April 2008
The family of a baby girl in India who was born with two faces have said that the child is a gift from god, despite her disability. The child’s father, Vinod Kumar, told the press that he was happy with his baby the way she was. He said: “Whatever God has given me is acceptable.”
The as-yet-unnamed baby was born three weeks ago with two pairs of eyes and lips and two noses, but is still managing to eat and breathe normally. In fact, her disabilities are making her something of a celebrity in her highly religious hometown of Noida in Northern India, which is just 50 kilometres northeast of New Delhi.
Mr Kumar said that he was initially a little scared when his wife Sushma gave birth to the baby. He said: “I had never seen something like this in my life so naturally I was a little scared when I first saw her.” However, he soon learned to love the child and said that he has no plans to check whether the child is suitable for treatment or corrective surgery from doctors. He said: “The doctor said everything is normal when she was born. So where's the need to get medical help?”
The baby’s disability is an extremely rare one, which is caused by the girl having two skulls that are joined together. Doctors have said that the delicate nature of the girl’s disability renders her inoperable. D.K Gupta of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences explains, “Since the heads are fused, separating them is not possible.” Still, Dr Gupta believes that the girl should be examined to ensure that her disability has not left her with any long-term problems. He said: “Clearly the child is in no immediate danger, but it has to be checked whether the oral and nasal cavity and other passages" are functioning properly.
