Gateway Rail opens Punjab’s Pvt Rail Linked Logistics Park
22nd December 2008
Gateway Rail Freight Ltd – GatewayRail (a subsidiary of Gateway Distriparks Ltd – GDL), opened Punjab’s first private rail linked Logistics Park at Sanehwal near Dhandari Kalan in Ludhiana.
This Rail Linked Logistics Park is spread over 50 acres of land and has a two-line rail siding to handle inter modal transportation of EXIM and domestic containers. Punjab has a huge unmet demand for rail based container transportation on both domestic and international routes. The present facilities are being supplemented by Delhi based container terminals resulting into higher overall transaction cost for the customers.
Ludhiana, Dhandari, Mandi, Jalandhar, Barnala and Amritsar are the major markets in Punjab and Ludhiana is the ideal hub for providing inter-modal service to all these locations. There are four private CFSs operating out of Ludhiana. The GatewayRail terminal will provide excellent rail connectivity for these CFSs.
GatewayRail has plans to provide regular services for the western ports of JNPT, Mundra and Pipavav. It also plans to operate regular services between the iron & steel producing states of West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand, Bihar and Punjab.
This terminal has been notified by Northern Railway on 19th December 2008 as open for container trains. The first two trains of GatewayRail for Sanehwal are already on run and are expected to deliver the domestic cargo in Punjab during this week.
This makes GatewayRail the only private container train operator of Indian Railways to have three terminals in India at Garhi Harsaru (near Gurgaon in NCR), Kalamboli (in Navi Mumbai) and Sanehwal. GatewayRail operates 12 trains – the largest fleet amongst the private operators - and provides end-to-end service through its in-house fleet of 235 trailers. GatewayRail has shown resilience and has modified its transport product during the economic slowdown and has kept its trains running with cargo.
Mr. Prem Kishan Gupta, Chairman & MD of GatewayRail said “This terminal will provide further fillip to GatewayRail’s ability to provide the trade with a one-stop solution through integration of terminal infrastructure and rolling stock capabilities and innovative use of technology and customer responsive service.”
