Will Madonna Adopt an Indian Baby?

07th April 2008

According to reports, pop star Madonna, 49, is to adopt a baby from India.

The star is thought to have decided to adopt an Indian child after taking a New Year holiday in the country with her film director husband Guy Ritchie, 39. While in the country, the pair met with Bollywood choreographer Sandip Soparrkar who has recently adopted an Indian child.  Soparrkar told reporters from The Sun that he spoke with the famous couple about the plight of homeless children in the country. He said: “We spoke about how there are so many children in India who need homes.”

Ritchie was thought to be uncertain about adopting again because of some family issues. A source said: “He has always been unsure about adoption as his own mother was adopted and had negative experiences of that.” However, it is thought that his famous wife persuaded him to change his mind, particularly as the couple are thought to have recently vowed to strengthen their marriage, after putting a string of high-profile rows behind them.

Madonna already has one adopted child, David, 2, who is from Malawi. However, the star gave up on the idea of adopting another child from the African country after getting frustrated with the amount of red tape involved with adopting baby David; she had to endure a highly stressful two-year legal battle to become the boy’s legal guardian. Both Ritchie and Madonna are thought to have agreed that adopting a child from India would be much easier.

Sources have said that Madonna will fly out to India to choose a baby as soon as she finishes promotion for her new album, Hard Candy. The singer also has two biological children, Lourdes, 11, and Rocco, 7.
